The Executive Director of Laboratory systems is responsible for the management and delivery of application development, 7X24 tier two support and strategic planning for the future direction of lab facing systems. Focuses on the quality of execution and continuous operations.


A highly visible role, The Executive Director is member of the IT senior leadership team, responsibly for the development of relationships with senior BU leaders, Medical and compliance offices. Is a critical player in the development of BU strategic plans and associated laboratory automation. 


The Executive Director manages an annual expense budget in excess of ~ $95MM and a staff of approximately ~550 FTEs.


Key Responsibilities


  • Plan, direct and manage multiple LISs and reporting systems in support of the daily operations including the physician, hospital and pathology lines of business.
  • Fosters a strong partnership and alliance with key leaders in all lines of business.
  • Establishes external customer relationships in alignment with the business leadership.
  • Deliver high quality solutions that provide consistent and reliable systems, applications and support 365 days per year, 24 hours per day in support of laboratory testing, application and data access, and information exchange within the company and to external customers.
  • Evaluate customer needs, evaluate emerging technologies and drive innovative solutions.
  • Lead a team of Directories, Managers, Developers, Project managers and Business Analysts responsible for the delivery of 100 plus projects per year and works to build a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Craft, manage and communicate the strategic direction of core applications in alignment with business strategy, market and industry tends.
  • Define, manage and communicate 3 year strategic plans for all systems.
  • Assesses current organizational capabilities and develops plan for improvements.
  • Hire and develop the next generation of IT and Business leaders.
  • Overall accountability for IT succession planning and leadership development in all lines of business.
  • Bring new and appropriate methods and technologies to tactical and strategic opportunities.
  • Manage staff of approximately 550 FTEs in support of business service expectations. Responsible for ensuring that all technical staff are efficiently and effectively managed. Requires ability to manage multiple departments, at multiple sites, technically diverse staff of directors, managers, individual contributors, and outsource partners.
  • Establish appropriate measurements and monitor for continuous improvement.
  • Oversees LIS budget and resource planning for multiple systems.



Desired Experience

Qualifications and Experience:


B.S. of B.A. in Computer Science or related fields

Advanced degree preferred


Work Experience:


  • At least 10-15 years of leadership experience, managing large scale, matrix IT organization.
  • Laboratory systems experience preferred, however, Business Critical Manufacturing, Retail, and/or High Volume Transactional Processing (banking, brokerage) backgrounds will be considered.
  • Experience managing offshore and vendor resources.
  • Experience with Legacy Systems required.
  • Experience in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and people development skills.
  • Experience building strong partnership with business leaders.
